The manga is located in the Edo period, in the Fukagawa district of the ancient Edo (now Tokyo). Because the area is prone to fires and floods, the inhabitants rent the necessary objects for daily life: pots, futons and clothes, from the stores, instead of buying them, so it does not bother them when they have to leave. Okō and Seiji, an older sister and younger brother, run one of these rental shops called Izumoya. However, among their things there are tsukumogami, objects that have been transformed into spirits after a hundred years of existence. Sometimes the brothers give these objects to the clients. Both can see and speak to these spirits, and others who sometimes come to see them for their fame.
Kadokawa published the original novel in 2007, and published a sequel entitled Tsukumogami, Asobō yo in 2013.
